Behold, A Lady

I often think about the situation in the black community concerning boys and young men. I consider it on life support. Let’s face it, it’s been a while since we thought of black men, as a whole, in a good light. Yes, I harp on us to the point that I believe I sound like an old man telling the kids to get off my grass. But lately, I have been thinking, “What’s the deal with the girls?” Where are the ladies? I mean REAL ladies, not just what you call a bunch of females. Any given day on social media you can find young girls shaking something or taking provocative pictures. You can see them out in public, wearing things that are far more revealing than the generation before them. Who is watching them?! Is anyone?

I have said many times that the way to judge a culture is to look at it’s women, and its looking pretty sad. While our boys are getting more and more feminine, our girls are becoming more masculine and very nonchalant sexually. Please don’t take me as some kind of moralist or a “Holier than thou” type person, I was trying to get in the draws in my day. The only difference is now these young girls are doing things that older women couldn’t even do back in the day.

I say all that to say this, I feel like we are approaching this from the wrong direction. We need to approach the situation with girls and get it corrected first and I believe boys will follow. We all know that girls are not checking for the “good guys” but what if they were?  What if they did? What if girls wanted a boy that had a 3.5 gpa, instead of ballers and the guys with money? Think about it. You don’t believe that boys wouldn’t be breaking their necks to try and be that? Just a thought.

Love your style Mr. Jones. If this happened, then the world would stop spinning on it's axle, lol.

The generation today that are allowed to procreate or have already done the damage, makes all the difference. Trying to instill those morals, values, and ethics into someone who was raised in a different type of setting, is the hard part.

I agree with you that reforming our community should start with the ladies. It was once said that men rule the world but women civilize it. Only now it seems that civility among our young women is lost. How do you suggest we begin transforming these girls into ladies?

I really have no idea. We would probably just have to start over. By starting over I mean, start with the next generation. I think the ones 10 yrs and up are pretty much lost.

I wonder the same thing, what is happening? I walked these streets and hear how some of these young girls dress and how they speak and I'm like what is happened and how will I save my daughter from falling into this type of behaviour.

I believe there is an abundance of women who are feminine, beautiful, confident, and don't feel the need to undress to be or feel sexy. I feel the same way about good men. Perhaps, it's because I'm an optimist, but really, you can't expect to find good men/good women in mainstream society. I'm not saying that lose and racy women aren't everywhere. All I'm saying is just because of a lack of popularity, does not mean they do not exist. A wise man once told me that your eyes only find what they seek. In that case, what are people looking for? What angle are they viewing the bigger picture? A lot of times we tend to complain about what we can change. Maybe it's a shift in perspective. Maybe the root of what we are discussing is in the home. Maybe the parents are to blame. And I do admitt that something needs to be done to improve the consciousness of our people and develop a sense of pride in ourselves and our culture.

“Your eyes only find what they seek.” I like that! I agree that there needs to be a shift in perspective. Today’s version of a lady looks a lot different than it did 20-30 years ago. The “ladies” of today are often scantily clad vixens famous for their big boobs, big butts, or sex tape performances. As a society we dont popularize beauty, class, AND brains – its as if the media doesn’t believe a woman can possess all three traits. So if these are the images our young ladies are bombarded with, it’s only natural that they will try to emulate what they see. How do we combat that?

I think you are spot on by saying that correcting this problem begins in the home…you would think more people would recognize such an obvious solution. Perhaps the reason why people have not recognized the solution is because they haven’t yet realized that this issue is a major problem, and that’s a shame.

  6. Burberry, excellent post. And agree with the previous comments. It starts at home, we have to instill values in our children that teach them how to be a gentleman and how to be a lady. We have to pay attention to what is going on in our culture and begin making conscious efforts to change it.
