Words of Encouragement: What’s In Your Dwelling? (Part 2)

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

As we dig deeper into the topic of What’s In Your Dwelling, let’s take a look into what a dwelling is. By definition, dwelling means a ”house” or “shelter”, but in this case we are referring to you, the person. Now understand that there aren’t all bad things in your dwelling. There are in fact some good things that dwell within you. Just like every bad person has some good within them somewhere, it just may take a while to fight through the rubble, but its there. Yet, in order for the bad not to overtake the good:

1) You have to acknowledge the good and work on the bad. (Problems will exceed prayers if prayers don’t exceed problems)

2) Remove the bad and replace it with something else. (When ”old furniture” is thrown out, it’s replaced with better durable, attractive, “matching” furniture)

Words of Encouragement: What’s In Your Dwelling? (Part 1)

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

In the next Words of Encouragement series we will speak on “Whats In Your Dwelling?” For many of us, it’s what’s in us that has hindered our closeness with God. In this series we will touch on how to problem solve within ourselves and also how to develop a deeper understanding of God in our lives. Some of us overlook the significance of God because we don’t know all the benefits of having Him. The scriptures tells us that we perish for the lack of knowledge and if you don’t know something then it’s impossible for you to know the importance of it in your life. We will also look at how people want God in certain places but not all the places that will give us a complete relationship with Him. The idea that because God is “in you”, you can do what you want is a little “shaky.” John 15:4 (ESV) tells us, Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” The word “abide” is the same as stay, stand, endure,  reside, dwell, remain and bear. God is telling us that if we abide in Him, he will stand with us through it all…but we must make sure that we are truly abiding in Him.

Words of Encouragement: In The Good and The Bad (Part 4)

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”

– 2 Timothy 4:2 ESV

As we bring to a close the topic of “In The Good And The Bad”, let’s first revisit the things we have discussed. We looked at what “Good” means biblically which is, “to be desired or approved of” or “that which is righteous”. Then we looked at what “Bad” means biblically which is, “that of poor quality, inferior or defective” or “wicked, evil, poor, nasty, vicious or ill”. Then we looked at how we act out our situation. In the “good” we have a great personality and speak to everyone, but in the “bad” we want to be secluded and not be bothered at all. At that point we have allowed our situation to dictate our mood. Then we looked at how “bad” to some, really isn’t bad at all…it’s normal. We looked at how “good” to some, really isn’t all that good to others. The experience of the person affects the response “In The Good And The Bad” naturally. Then we discussed the way we see bad, is the way God sees growth.

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”

– 2 Timothy 4:2 ESV

As we dig deeper into the topic of “In The Good And The Bad”, lets look at other areas where this exact principle could be applied. It could be applied in life when we are eagerly waiting on something to happen that hasn’t happened yet. It could also be applied when looking at someone desiring to get a degree in school because we all know not all of that is a good time. We could look at a friend in life that we grew up with and not all those times were good or bad. Here’s my point, you never know what is around the corner and the reason for the bad times. Most great thinkers and inventors ideas came when they were in the most difficult times of their lives. For some reason, pressure invokes us to be more creative, but you have to invite that creative time in and allow yourself to see growth through the trial.

Words of Encouragement: In The Good and The Bad (Part 2)

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”

– 2 Timothy 4:2 ESV

As we began to take a step into looking at making sure we remain faithful “In The Good And The Bad”, lets first look at some areas of this. Conditions change the attitude and personality, but why is that? Why do we look at where we are at in life, spiritually and situationally and think “I’m going to act out my situation?” As we discussed before, your good may not be someone else’s good or your bad may not be someone else’s bad. So in your mind and life, you have created parameters for what you consider good and bad. Many times because some of us have had such bad hands dealt to us in life, others “bad” is not really bad at all to us. In that same understanding, some of us have had a great life and what is considered “good” to another person may be the norm in our life. What we don’t do is take into consideration that there are “seasons” in life.
