“Did you hear me baby?” Kim asked when she didn’t get a response. “Who is Karen?”
“Huh? I mean….I heard you.” Erica stuttered. While looking towards the roof and scratching her head Erica added, “Karen? Karen who?”
Kim rolled her eyes thinking to herself, I already know who she is, so just admit it.
“I believe her last name is Thompson? Yes, that was it. So who is she?” Kim pried.
Erica-Rose took a deep breath wondering why she thought there was a chance she could be asking about another Karen.
“Just an old friend. Why?” Erica said hiding her frustration.
Kim’s tone would prove that Erica didn’t hide it very well. “Why?” Kim asked. “What do you mean why? I can’t ask about some random girl when we’ve been dating exclusively!?”
“Babe!” Erica yelled. “I’m not dating her. What are you talking about?”
Erica was up and out the bed now and stepping into her boxers. Kim lay in the bed still, wrapping the soaked sheet around her body.
“Babe, I won’t be mad.” Kim stood still holding the sheet in front of her. “Why do you think you came home to this sexual paradise?”
Kim wrapped her arms around Erica’s neck, kissing her ear, “I wanted you to know that I still love you. But please……tell me the truth.”
Erica pushed Kim off of her so hard, she flew onto the bed. “Woman are you crazy?!” Erica continued to get dressed. “You call yourself bribing me with pussy so I’d tell you something I’m not doing?!”
Kim jumped up, angry that Erica had pushed her so hard. “Look baby, all I’m saying is that I can forgive you if you’re honest. Baby, I want you in my life, but I will not take the lying.”
Erica had never been more confused. How did Kim even know about Karen? Why did she think they were dating behind her back?
“Look Kim,” Erica said with a deep sigh, “I……am……not……dating Karen. We use to date a long time ago, and that’s it. Now shut up about it.”
Did she just tell me to shut up, Kim thought to herself. “Erica, who on earth are you talking to?” Kim asked jumping inches from Erica’s face.
“Kim….please have a seat and just trust what I say.” Erica responded.
“Okay babe, if you don’t want to confess, you don’t have to.” Kim walked towards her dresser and pulled a single sheet of paper from the top drawer. “But I am not making things up and I have proof.”
Kim handed the paper to Erica. Erica’s eyes began to widen the second she started reading the words on the paper. It was addressed to her and from Karen, thanking her for the intimate lunch and hoping for more. It was signed “Your True Love, Karen”.
Kim snatched the letter out of Erica’s hands when enough time had passed to read it. “This was on your porch with a dozen long stemmed, red roses that I made sure to throw in the trash.” Kim balled up the letter, throwing it back at Erica, “Are you still going to tell me she’s just an old friend?”
Erica was speechless. I didn’t realize Karen would try and find out where I lived, she thought to herself.
“Kim, I know this looks bad.” Erica began. “But I promise it was just lunch. She was my first and we ended weird. She just got back in town and I went there just to see if something was there and also for closure.”
There was a long pause before Erica finally continued, “Kim, tonight I was going to tell you how much I really love you and that I’m going to do a better job as a girlfriend. I made my choice. It’s you.”
“You know what Erica?” Kim replied sliding her arms into her robe. “The fact that you even had a choice to make hurts like hell.”
Kim walked past Erica, who was fully dressed by now, and stopped at her room door. “I wanted to know the truth and something is telling me, you’re still leaving plenty out. This letter is saying so much more.”
Kim paused, sighed heavily and deep and then opened the door, “Please just leave.”
Erica’s mouth dropped open, “Kim are you serious right now? I tell you I’m ready to give you my all and you kick me out!?”
“I just don’t believe you Erica. If you can’t be completely honest……if you still have feelings for this woman…..I just can’t keep waiting on you.” Kim shook her head. “You won’t give me your all babe, you’ll just take mine.”
“I’ll be home when you come to your senses Kimberley.” Erica replied, walking out the room.
Erica called a cab to take her home and couldn’t wrap her mind around what just happened. What am I going to do now, Erica thought. How on earth did Karen find out where I lived? I can’t believe Kim is giving up on me.
By the time Erica arrived at her town home she was exhausted from the night and the argument. All she needed was some rest and then she would get Kim back and question Karen. Not necessarily in that order though.
Erica paid the driver and walked up to her front door. She almost missed it because she was so sleepy. Walking into the house, Erica turned back to look at the walkway, vaguely thinking she stepped on something soft.
She was right. Lying in the middle of her walkway was a single long stemmed, red rose.
