Falling Out In Love: Chapter 15

Read Chapter 14

Erica walked back to pick up the rose and turned to go back into the house. She stared at the rose, considering for a moment that it could have been from the bouquet that Kim said she threw away. If that were true, the rose would have been dead, whereas this rose was fresh, alive and the deepest shade of red she had ever seen.

A wave of frustration was now taking over Erica’s mind. Nothing seemed right about this rose outside her house, but the exhaustion from her trip and evening with Kim was beginning to take a toll on her.

Erica placed the rose on her counter, coincidentally right beside the rose that was left behind by the burglar. It was dead by now and beginning to wilt. However, laying side by side, Erica couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the two roses. It was small, nothing probably, but even the stems were cut the exact same way. It looked as it someone snapped the stem with their hands and left the edges serrated and peeling.

Erica went back to the note that Kim found on her doorstep. Wondering, why on earth Karen would find out where she lived and leave a note like that on her doorstep. Even the flowers seemed odd. The entire time, they dated, Karen never bought her flowers. It wasn’t her style.

Erica didn’t mind though. She killed any type of plant within reach of her home. Laying across her bed and kicking off her shoes, Erica-Rose reminded herself of all the changes someone could make over four years.

If Karen had got into sending roses, did she leave this rose too? If she left this rose that was identical to the burglar’s, did more change about Karen than she thought?

Erica shook the thought from her head. Karen couldn’t have been the burglar she convinced herself. Kim said it was a guy. Didn’t she? Suddenly, Erica wasn’t so sure. It had to have been a man, he tried to rape her. Karen did say the burglar wore a mask. what if she was just flustered and her details were fuzzy?

Erica stood, angry at herself for thinking such a thing without even talking to Karen. How could she think so little of her, so quickly. Erica stripped down to her boxers and bra, brushed her teeth and then slipped under her covers for a nap.

Erica drew her final conclusion before closing her eyes, that it had to be a guy. Of course it was. A random burglar. The roses were just roses and it could be just a big coincidence.

Erica was drifting off fast, like she knew she would. Her body sank into her pillow and mattress, like a weight into a marshmallow. She wished Kim were laying in her arms. The sun peaked through her blinds, but nothing would disturb her from the much needed sleep she was about to get.

It was quiet. Blissfully quiet. Even Erica’s mind shut down with silence. Right before being completely gone in slumber land, Erica spoke out loud as if she was talking to someone in he room, “I mean someone could have hired the burglar and made it look like a random robbery…” She paused for a moment and then turned over. “Nahhh….nevermind.”
