Karen sat up in bed with her eyes wide open. As Karen grabbed a tissue on her night stand she glanced at the alarm clock that read 12:00pm. It was noon already, but Karen had been up since 6:00am. She wiped the tears from her eyes and blew her nose. She was afraid to leave the bed now.
Karen woke up at six that morning to the sound of her doorbell. It was extremely early for a visitor, but halfheartedly she hoped it was Erica. By the time Karen swung the front door open, whoever it was, had left. It was the single, long stemmed rose lying on her welcome mat that set the initial panic in.
Karen grabbed the rose and slammed her door in one motion. She locked all three bolts and looked around the house. All the curtains were still drawn closed and the silence was comforting, yet frightening at the same time.
Tossing the rose onto her counter with the other three, Karen ran to her room and grabbed her cell phone.
The first rose was on her car days ago while she was running. She initially assumed her car was mistaken and never gave it a second thought. When the second rose found her car again the next day, outside of her office, she was torn between coincidence and a secret admirer that was following her. She told herself she would have to be very aware of her surroundings.
It was the third rose that was sitting on her driver’s seat just a day ago that sent her to the police station. They weren’t very helpful though. The officer probably thought the same about her. She had no information, no name, not even a description. So naturally, there wasn’t much the police could do for her.
Now, rose number four had shown up on her doorstep at six in the morning, making her aware that whoever this was, definitely knew where she lived. She ran to her room to grab her cell and called the police station again. It pained the officer to tell her that because no break-in had been made and she still couldn’t identify the stalker, there wasn’t an emergency. However, she could still come down later and list this incident with the others so it would be on file.
The entire morning Karen sat on edge. She grabbed a knife from the kitchen and barricaded herself in her room. Every noise made her jump and she cried off and on for hours. Just after noon, she found herself drifting off. There was silence…and then the doorbell.
Karen was on her feet in seconds, but remained frozen. Karen looked around the room with the knife in one hand and grabbed the baseball bat by the door with her other. She thought to herself, whoever it is will just drop the rose and then leave. Just stay very quiet.
As if the visitor heard her thoughts, the doorbell rang again. Oh no….they’re not leaving, Karen thought again. What do I do? What do I do?
By the time the doorbell rang a third time, Karen had decided she would creep up on the stranger to get a good look at who it was. Besides, she could see them, but they couldn’t see her.
Karen crept outside her room and made her way to the front door quietly. She tiptoed all the way and kept the bat and knife close to her. She didn’t hear anything. Maybe the stranger was already gone. Karen placed her ear to the door and paused.
Boom……Boom….Boom…..was the knock from the other side. Karen jumped back and had to drop her knife to stop the scream from exiting her mouth.
Okay Karen, this is not going down. You are not an invalid, Karen tried to convince herself.
Karen grabbed the knife and stepped back up to the door. Starting to get a little pissed, Karen decided to start fighting back. Silently, she unlocked all three bolts.
“If it’s a fight you want, it’s a fight you’re going to get.” Karen said in whisper to herself.
Without thinking her plan through, Karen swung the front door open, closed her eyes, let out a high pitch war cry and began swinging her bat and knife in every direction possible.
Immediately, Karen felt both of her arms being grabbed and the weapons shaken from her grasp. She was pinned to the door standing inside her house. She was still screaming and kicking as hard as she could.
“Karen! What the hell are you doing?” Erica asked.
It was silent. Karen opened her eyes and looked into Erica’s. She let her body fall limp and when Erica caught her, she wrapped her arms around her neck and began to cry.
