Erica made it back to her car in no time. She never even looked back to see if Karen had come out to chase her. She knew she wouldn’t though. Why would she? Four years have passed and Karen has obviously moved on. They both have. However, Erica kept hearing those words over and over in her head, I miss you so much, and I can’t wait to see you.
The freeway wasn’t as crowded as usual. That was a good thing because, Erica hated LA traffic. A familiar song began playing on the radio, Erica turned it up to hear it better. She was right, it was Beautiful Surprise by India Arie. Erica sighed, remembering vividly all the times she and Karen danced to it.
Sometimes they would just start dancing out of nowhere. No music, no audience, they would just grab hold of each other and dance. Erica began to see it so clearly in her head. It was almost as if she was there all over again, but this time, she was watching.
The room was lit by candles, there were wine glasses on the table, and their heads were being thrown back in slow motion as they laughed. She could even see in their body language how they often challenged each other’s dancing skills.
That’s when it happened. Erica had been fighting back tears since the moment she saw Karen earlier that day, and she finally lost the battle. Tears began streaming down her face. The sobs coming from her vocal chords started to get louder. She got off the freeway and pulled into the nearest gas station.
So many emotions were going through her head. Erica was mad that even after four years, she still wasn’t strong enough. She was also sad though, that Karen dared to love someone else. How could she love someone else, when she wasn’t able to love me? Erica wondered why she even asked her to come in.
As the song ended, Erica grabbed a tissue to dry her eyes. She re-applied her lip gloss and took a deep breath. Once she looked at her surroundings, she realized she got off at the right exit and continued the four miles to her condo.
When Erica pulled into her driveway she recognized the red BMW she knew would be parked on the street. She took another deep breath and began grabbing her bags to walk inside.
She was met at the door with a big and beautiful smile. “Hey baby,” Kimberly exclaimed, throwing her arms around Erica’s neck.
Erica squeezed her tightly, she loved that Kim was so affectionate. “Hey beautiful,” Erica replied with a grin.
Kim took the shopping bags from Erica, “Ooo, someone went shopping on Melrose. What did you get me?”
“Not a single thing,” Erica answered, laughing out loud. “Why do girls think you bought them something, just because you went shopping? Get up off my merchandise.” Erica playfully took the shopping bags from Kim and tossed them on the couch.
Kim followed the bags and Erica followed her nose into the Kitchen. It was always good to come home to a home cooked meal. Even though Kim lived half an hour away, she came by often to cook Erica’s favorites.
Tonight it was tilapia. “Oh baby,” Erica called out, “I love it when my place smells like your food.”
There was no reply, so Erica called out again as she dipped her tasting spoon into one of the other pots. “Baby?”
A second later, Kim appeared in the doorway of the kitchen, “If you didn’t buy me anything, who is this outfit for?” Kim was wearing the two piece lingerie set Erica bought for her, hoping she would model it.
“Oh,” Erica finally responded. “That? That ummmm…” Not able to think of a clever reply, Erica just leaned against the counter and licked her lips before she said, “Turn around, let me see how it looks on you.”
