Read Chapter 13

The next four months were very trying on Jae’s patience. She spent the first month trying desperately to get Regina to at least acknowledge her existence. She had completely exhausted her bag of tricks: sending flowers, offering to cook dinner, swearing she changed, jewelry purchases, love letters and all out begging at one point. By month two, Jae decided to take a step back. She only had flowers delivered twice a week and minimized the lengthy voicemails she was leaving on her machine. During month three, Jae was sending infrequent text messages and allowing her lady friends to attempt filling the void. Her one night stands and emotionless flings were at an all time high and she was going through women at an all new rate. Now here she was at month four, determined to make it change.

Morgan was in a torn bliss. She hated to see Jae going through her emotions, but she couldn’t help but to believe that this was for the best. Jae was always the type to want what she couldn’t have. Morgan convinced herself that the pain Jae felt over this break up wasn’t because she felt for Regina, but rather because she had lost – and Jae was never one to handle losing very well. By day, Morgan was supportive of one of her closest friends… but by night, she was attached to the pair of arms that held Regina tightly as she slept. Morgan made certain to play her cards right. She never pressured Regina for her presence or confessed to any emotions… she allowed them to just enjoy their time together – which was growing in frequency.

Both Morgan and Regina were ready to settle into bed for the night.They had recently fallen into a comfortable routine with one another and while Regina made her way around blowing out all the candles, Morgan created a playlist for them to fall asleep to. More often than not, they fell asleep without having sex – just simply completely intertwined with one another… perfectly satisfied.

Just a few hours into their sleep, they were both ripped from their dreams by a pounding at the door. “Gina! Baby! Open the door! Please!! I need you.” Both of them jumped from their positions so quickly, they bumped heads.

“Shit!” whispered Regina in a shout, “Jae is here!” She struggled through the darkness to find clothes to slip on while Morgan held her head in her hands and tried to get her thoughts in order.

There was more banging… “Baby please! I need you.”

“Ignore it. She’ll give up and go away.” rationalized Morgan.

The banging got more energized. “Baby! Baby! Baby!”

“Ignore that? Look, just stay in here and I’ll find a way to get rid of her. Don’t move.” Regina ran out the bedroom and closed the door behind her. She exhaled deeply and tried to calm her nerves. Nervously, she opened the door just wide enough to see through it clear. Immediately, she knew Jae was wasted.

“Hey baby, I’m glad you answered!” slurred Jae as she reached out to embrace Regina, who wasn’t having it.

“What the hell are you doing banging on my door at 4 in the morning?? Woman, are you crazy? My neighbors are going to have a fit!”

“I’m sorry” apologized Jae with a truly pitiful face. “I had to see you. I just want to be with you tonight, let me stay.”

Unable to stomach the idea of letting Jae get back behind the wheel of her car in her condition, she opened her door wider and started to allow her in. “Here are the rules: 1. You sleep ON THE COUCH. 2. You don’t say a damn thing to me. 3. As soon as your eyes pop open in the morning, you get up and out. Deal?”

Relieved that she had finally broken her down a bit, Jae attempted to hide her smile, “Deal. Deal. Deal.”

Regina went to the linen closet and retrieved an extra pillow and blanket, then tossed them to Jae on the couch. Once she was certain that she wouldn’t be getting back up, Regina returned to her room and to her surprise, Morgan was no where to be found. She searched in the bathroom, closet and under the bed before realizing she must have gone out the window.
