Read Chapter 3

Morgan quickly rose to her feet and placed herself across the living room.

“It was only twice. Man, I know it was wrong. It should have never happened, but I didn’t think you took her seriously. When I realized what she meant to you I told her it could never happen again and we couldn’t let you find about it. I’m sorry bro…… I’m sorry.”

Jae interjected, “TWICE MY ASS! Own up to your shit! An engagement? Do you think I’m fucking stupid?”

Morgan shook her head, dumbfounded. “Engagement? You mean yours? I knew you were proposing tonight, but man it was years ago. I didn’t think it was worth mentioning…” Jae interrupted.

“Nah nigga. YOUR engagement to Regina!”

“WTF? Never! Me? You’re tripping.”

Jae felt her hands closing into fists again as she was rising in frustration. “Regina told me that y’all are getting married.” She turned to start towards the door as Morgan rushed over and stood in front of her.

“Married? Hell no. Man, I messed up years ago. But why would I plan on marrying that girl? I’m good.”

The doorbell chimes and they both look as it eases open and Regina steps in completely out of breath. She takes one look at their disheveled clothing and Morgan’s busted lip and she begins to cry.

Both women look at Regina in disbelief, but Morgan is the first to speak. “Regina, what the hell did you tell Jae? A marriage… Are you delusional? You know what happened back then was a mistake and I thought we had an understanding.”

[Three years prior]

Regina swayed side to side in the VIP of Risque Dulce, while making failed attempts at maintaining her balance in her 5 inch heels while her eyes were closed. She hated spending her Saturday nights at Jae’s club, but with all of her new found groupies, she found it important to make her presence known. Regina’s friends were dancing and talking over the music, but she was in a world all her own. She poured herself another shot of Ciroc Red Berry and went back to swaying.

After several shots of her favorite vodka, Regina found her stilettos to be more of a hindrance, than a fashion statement and slipped out of them. As the DJ switched the mood from hip hop to old school reggae, she noticed Jae emerging from her back corner office. While Jae made her way around the club, she made it her business to acknowledge several of her friends and regulars. One woman in particular was eager to remain in Jae’s face and appeared a bit too friendly.

Regina quickly surveyed her outfit: red dress, red heels, red bag, red costume jewelry – she was really basic, and no true competition. When she strongly pressed her body against Jae and started to dance, Regina felt her blood pressure rise, but waited a full two songs before making a decision.

She abandoned her friends, purse and shoes in VIP and made her way to where Jae was dancing and Morgan was close behind.

“Who is she?!” Regina demanded as she wiggled her drunken finger in the girl’s face.

The woman opened her mouth ready to hit with Regina with a stern tell off, but thought better of it when Jae stepped between the two of them.

“Baby, please don’t do this tonight.” Jae pleaded as she tugged Regina by the wrist back towards her office. She looked back towards Morgan. “Can you grab her stuff for me?” Morgan gave her a nod and retreated to VIP.

“You know my owning this club involves me being friendly with a lot of people. You can’t get upset every time someone approaches me. This is my business Regina! Damn, trust me sometimes.”

Regina rolled her eyes and gave up her fight with gravity as she dropped onto the couch. “Trust my ass Jae! You’ve slept with about half the women in this club!”

Jae was standing over Regina screaming at the top of her lungs when Morgan walked in on them. “GET OVER IT! It happened. It’s in the past. You’re giving me another chance. Stop bringing up old shit! Yeah, I broke your trust in the past, but this is business.” Jae looked towards Morgan. “Take her home for me please.”

Regina climbed to her feet and was in Jae’s face. “I’m not going anywhere, except to hang out with your new friend.” Jae shook her head and walked out of the office. By the time Regina was finished fumbling to put on her shoes, Morgan had convinced her to allow her to drive her home.

After she yelled and slurred her words the entire ride home, Morgan helped her into the house and to bed. Regina had finally shut up long enough for Morgan to get in a few words. “Look, try trusting her. You can’t believe that every woman who meets her wants her. Jae is a good dude and you need to relax. Things happened in the past, but that was the past baby. You have to let it go now.”

Morgan turned to leave and Regina began to cry. “Please don’t leave Morgan. I can’t be alone right now.” She patted the bed next to her. “Just stay with me until the club closes and Jae comes back. I can’t be alone.”

Morgan looked at her watch and then back into her eyes. “Only if you promise to stop crying and yelling and try to sleep off some of that alcohol in your system.”

Regina quickly wiped her eyes and settled into the covers as Morgan settled on top of the blanket next to her.

Regina woke up and found the clock to read 6:37, Morgan sound asleep beside her and no Jae in sight. She quietly slide out of the bed and went to her closet to retrieve sweatpants and placed over her pajamas. After lifting the keys to Morgan’s car, she headed over to Jae’s house across town.

After finding Jae’s car in the driveway with one that was unfamiliar, she parked a few doors down the street. As she turned off the engine and began to get out the car, she saw the front door open and two bodies emerged. Now, Regina slid down in the seat to watch the two interact.

Once Jae had walked the woman to her car, she gave her a warm embrace and playfully kissed her goodbye. Regina squinted her eyes to get a better look at the woman and although the outfit was different, there was no confusing who she was… She was the lady in red from the club the night before.
