“Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons. Love yourself, trust your choices and everything is possible.”
- Cherie Carter-Scott
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read this quote. However, each time I have read these words my perspective was shifted from negative to positive. I’m always left with feelings of confidence and peace; reassured that everything in my life is working out perfectly. When I’m feeling down, frustrated or hopeless (or if I know of someone in need of a mental or emotional boost), I search for a quote that addresses the situation at hand.
I’m not sure when it happened or how, but I started to “collect” quotes. If I read something that moves me, I write it down it my book journal or on a Post-It and I hang it up in my cubicle at work. Recently I was watching The Matrix for the umpteenth time and when Laurence Fishburne’s character Morpheus said, “Don’t think you are, know you are.” I jumped up and immediately wrote the quote on my vision board. I’ve watched that movies so many times and never noticed that line (or the importance of it for that matter), but in that moment it made so much sense.
Memorizing or having some of your favorite quotes (or Bible verses) on hand can help give you a boost and regain your composure. I sometimes find it helpful to read the words aloud to activate their true power, even if it’s at a whisper while I sit at my desk or ride the train. And if one quote isn’t enough, I keep reading until I’m in a state of peace and calmness. Below are seven of my favorite quotes that help rejuvenate me.
“But when he thought to complain about the burden of its weight, he remembered that, because he had the jacket, he had withstood the cold of the dawn.”
– Paul Coelho, The Alchemist
*I like this quote because it reminds me that while we may complain about our burdens or tribulations, we must remember that it strengthens us to endure future challenges and hurdles.*
“True happiness is not the absence of suffering. You cannot have day after day of clear skies. True happiness lies in building a self that stands dignified and indomitable. Happiness doesn’t mean having a life free from all difficulties but that whatever difficulties arise, without being shaken in the least, you can summon up the unflinching courage and conviction to fight and overcome them.”
- Daisaku Ikeda, Educator and Buddhist Philosopher
*Ikeda’s words remind me that I must focus on strengthen myself mentally and spiritually, as opposed to trying to attain some pseudo optimum spiritual state that doesn’t exist.*
“The Sun never says to the Earth, ‘You owe me.’ Look what happens with a love like that. It lights up the whole sky”.
– Hafiz, Persian mystic and poet
*Besides finding this quote simply beautiful, it reminds me to be love.*
“Pain is just another word for fear. True believers have no fears. That means not doubting yourself or God.”
– Marvin Gaye, Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye
*Reminder that where there is faith, there is no room for fear.*
“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”
- Tyrion Lannister, A Game of Thrones
*The message of embracing yourself for who you are, and being proud and owning your short comings resonates with me. [This particular character is a dwarf]*
“The words ‘I am” are potent words; be careful what you hitch them to. The thing you’re claiming has a way of reaching back and claiming you”.
- A. L. Kitselman, author
*I like this quote because it reminds me to be more aware of the words that I speak over my life and what I choose to claim.*
“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind. Not with it”.
– Henry Ford
