[Editor's note: I mistakenly posted Part 4 of this series as Part 3 last week. I've updated Part 3 with the correct message. I apologize for the inconvenience Please read Part 3 here.]

Cash, Cars & Cribs

“And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Luke 12:15 (ESV)

As we bring the topic of Cash, Cars & Cribs to a close, lets revisit the things that we have learned about this topic. First we looked at how the “American Dream” often times interferes with “Christ Doctrine”, how what America drives is opposite of what God teaches, and how one of these items without discipline can end you. Second, we looked at how many people have allowed their “status” to be the deciding factor in the way they live life. Sometimes all a person needs is a reason and they can give you an explanation for everything they do, no matter if it’s wrong or right. Then in that reason alone, they can easily pass judgement comparing your life to theirs. Finally, we looked at how too much of either one of these things can single handedly rip your life apart. Also, for some reason we look pass the damage it brings and think that with it we can accomplish anything. In the book of 1 Corinthians 14:20 (ESV) it says, “Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.” This is where the enemy gets us the most, in our thinking. If he can beat us in our mind, our heart is soon to follow.

Thinking, “using thought or rational judgment”, often times has nothing to do with the way things turn out. In our minds we create this great outcome for everything, but never take into consideration that our rational thinking is not spiritual. The bible tells us in Ephesians 6:12 (KJV), “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Although “rational” thinking is required, however it should not be the extent of our thoughts. Case and point; in Luke 10:27 (ESV) it explained that the Lord desires for you to love Him with ALL your HEART, MIND, SOUL and STRENGTH. The heart can convince the mind to do or think things and the mind can convince the heart to do things. If you are in love, your heart feels it and then your mind is convinced. When a bad break up takes place, you hear or see things that your heart never felt, but your mind (thinking rationally) convinces your heart of reality. Statistics show that people who have been heartbroken find it hard to fully trust people. Trust has to be earned. Earning is something we see or feel. Feeling is heart, so then the mind follows. Now you may ask what does all that have to do with Cash, Cars & Cribs, well its not the initial thing that’s the issue, its what it spirals into. God wants us to depend on Him and for us and our “rational” thinking”, we have to have a reason. If we have everything we wanted on earth, how then can we feel that there is something to depend on? Money and the things we have, often times remove the reason to depend. When you have some time, take a moment to evaluate the most sinful people. The enemy has their HEART or their MIND. He presents things to them continually that will bring them even lower (not initially but what it spirals into) but with the way we think (rationally), we think “blessing”.

We have all heard this saying at one point and if you haven’t then here it is, “What you feed your mind you will become in time”. The way we are built as humans, born into sin and shaped into iniquity, that alone gives us NO HOPE without depending on the Lord Jesus Christ. If you allow the enemy to defeat you in the mind or heart, he will defeat you in life. God does not only inform us, but also restores and directs us. Psalm 73:26 (ESV) says, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” There is no greater love than the love Christ provides for His people. I challenge you today, to ask God to reveal to you “areas” where you need to change and improve, but allow Him the lead in the restoring process. For our help is in the Lord!

Be Blessed!
